Reflections from the sky, meditations on earth: Modern Arab Calligraphic art

Arabic calligraphy has a special spiritual significance – as it is used for writing the Koran, the Islamic sacred scriptures – and an intrinsic decorative value that plays an important role in Islamic art.
Towards the middle of last century some artists representing different Arab nationalities, in search of an identity and artistic expression, experimented Arabic calligraphy, exploiting its abstract potential. The Modern Calligraphic School is a great movement in contemporary Arab and Islamic art. The 110 works on display are by 76 artists, among the most representative in the Arab world, and come from the permanent collection of calligraphic works of the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts, and include paintings, installations, graphic works and art books.
