An exhibition of the oldest preserved map of the Roman Empire in its first printed Italian edition, the “Tabula Militaris Itineraria” coming from the collection of Gianni Brandozzi from Ascoli Piceno.
The Tabula Militaris Itineraria, also known as Tabula picta, is the first map that depicts several streets of the known world by the Romans around the middle of the fourth century: this manuscript has come down to us is a copy made in the twelfth or thirteenth century. It is a parchment, divided into 11 segments, about 7 meters long and 34 cm high, currently preserved at the National Library in Vienna.
The Tabula Militaris Itineraria on display at the Mercati di Traiano, it is the first printed edition in Italy, in the Marche, by the Dominican friar Cristianopulo Podocataro, by the will of the archaeologist and Archbishop of Loreto, Bellinio, who decided to accomapny it with a volume published in 1809 in which he summarized his latest studies on the Tabula, supplementing and correcting the work of scholars of previous centuries.

Groups: (max 30 visitors): A booking service (without guided tour) is available for groups, for an additional fee of € 25,00. The booking fee does not include the cost of the museum entrance tickets. Schools (max 30 pupils/students): advance booking is required for the admission. Guided tours are available (advance booking is required).

ticket window.
